:: Emerging from the Spring Equinox, this piece is an honoring of the Sunbird ~ of Palestinian resistance ~ olive seeds, prickly pear cacti, and poppies. How the land speaks through these beings and reminds us of the interconnectedness between place, non-human kin, justice and humanity.
May we see how the struggle for Palestinian liberation is not only a cry for healing legacies of violence and the dismantling of colonial and neo-colonial empires, but is simultaneously the Earth’s cry for justice.
I was recently reading an article about Anton Khalilieh, a Palestinian bird-watcher who expressed how some of the best bird-watching spots in the West Bank are on illegal Israeli settlements, which Palestinians are not allowed access to. Bird watching is largely luxurious and inaccessible due to the ongoing genocide/political climate, lack of funds, time, and access.
To live in a world where systemic disconnection from the Earth…from the ability to witness the birds and listen to their calls, to drink clean water from the rivers, to have a deep knowing and understanding of the ecosystems we are apart of~ this disconnection is a powerful and dominant strategy of empire. The logic behind life-destroying regimes reveal to us how genocide and ecocide are deeply intertwined.
So I sit with the beautiful sunbird as a reminder of how birds defy borders, defy nation-states, defy carceral systems~ free to roam this Earth as was intended for all beings. I’d like to think of birdsong as the songs of liberation. To be in slowness enough to listen, to remember our humanity, to remember that we are part of this Earth, is already an act of resistance.
The silencing of anti-genocide voices will not succeed.
